Advisor, Financing and Partnerships

Washington DC, USA; Freetown, Sierra Leone; Maputo, Mozambique; Nairobi Kenya; Yangon, Myanmar; or New Delhi, India. We are open to remote working arrangements depending on the circumstances.

About the position

Mobilizing financial resources is essential to Namati’s vision for a dynamic, flourishing legal empowerment movement.  We aim to cultivate an ecosystem of funding partners and advocates deeply committed to empowering communities worldwide.  Every conversation we have and every concept note we pen has the potential to crystalize, for a potential ally, the power of putting the law into the hands of the people. We think of our development team members not as fundraisers separate from our programs, but rather as passionate champions with a deep understanding of the nuances of our work.

In 2018, Namati and the Global Legal Empowerment Network launched a three-year Justice for All campaign, a central aim of which is to raise financing for the field of access to justice. Our goal is to catalyze significant public and private investment towards primary justice services in the coming years, by supporting partnerships and catalyzing joint action among civil society, governments, international institutions, philanthropies and the private sector.

A convener and catalyst of the legal empowerment movement, Namati is uniquely positioned to drive these financial resources toward our community. When funders support our work they, by default, engage the broader movement, and in some cases, are now proactively seeking out grassroots legal empowerment practitioners for grantmaking. Similarly, as funders increasingly perceive legal empowerment as a set of methods and tools that can fulfill their own goals - sectoral goals like public health and environmental protection, as well as cross-cutting goals like access to justice - Namati emerges as a priority target for support.

To leverage these trends, we’re searching for an experienced advisor who will join us at the nexus of fundraising and advocacy to cultivate and steward investments from bilateral and multilateral donors, and high-capacity philanthropies for Namati and the broader legal empowerment movement.

Overall, the advisor will be responsible for the following-

  • Lead on identification, cultivation, and stewardship of partnerships with bilateral, multilateral, and philanthropic donors who are well-positioned to meaningfully invest in Namati -- wherein the scope of such investments in our work will necessarily impact the broader field -- and with whom we can advocate on an ongoing basis to invest directly in our field.
  • Support the Global Network and Advocacy team to develop, manage, and implement targeted convenings at key events -- for example, the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting; the World Bank bi-annual meetings; and the High-Level Political Forum -- where funders with potential to give to Namati are present. Priorities for donor convenings may include consensus-building activities; public relations activities, such as press conferences; donor engagement, stewardship and cultivation; and progress reporting.
  • Strategize and coordinate efforts to diversify revenue from a range of sources, including domestic governments, social enterprise, client contributions, domestic philanthropy, and global justice mechanisms (for example, REDD+).
  • Manage highly complex and multifaceted proposal preparation processes with institutional funders, coordinating across multiple stakeholders in tight timelines.
  • Support development, editing and finalizing of technical narrative content of proposals and reports to funders.

  • Track record of successfully coordinating large-scale strategic initiatives: You have demonstrated expertise in coordinating large-scale, complex initiatives such as major fundraising projects. • Technical expertise: You are an expert on access to justice, legal empowerment, and/ or primary justice services, and/ or one or more of Namati’s primary thematic issue areas -- land and natural resources, health, and citizenship.

  • Growth oriented: You’re always seeking to better yourself and your work, and you will push yourself to the peak of performance to help fulfill our mission. In service of that growth, you welcome and delight in feedback from supervisors, peers, and anyone else.

About Namati

Namati is dedicated to placing the power of law in the hands of people.

For billions of people around the world, the law is broken. It’s an abstraction -- or worse, a threat -- but not something we can use to exercise our basic rights.

Namati is building a global movement of grassroots advocates who empower people to understand, use, and shape the law. These “barefoot lawyers” form a dynamic, creative frontline that can squeeze justice out of even broken systems.

In the past four years, Namati and our partners have worked with over 65,000 clients to take on some of the greatest challenges of our times: protecting community lands, enforcing environmental law, and securing basic rights to healthcare and citizenship.

We track data on every case and use that information to advocate for systemic changes, like better policies for land governance in Liberia, environmental regulation in India, and healthcare delivery in Mozambique.

And we're joining forces for change. Namati convenes the Global Legal Empowerment Network -- over 1500 groups and 5,400 individuals from 160 countries learning from one another and bringing justice to communities in every part of the world.

Our work has gained recognition. Namati and the Global Legal Empowerment Network were recognized with the prestigious Skoll Award in 2016. Honoring CEO Vivek Maru as a fellow, Ashoka called ours the “best law-for-all model we’ve seen.” We’ve been published and featured in the Guardian, the New York Times, and Forbes. And we’ve had some hefty supporters, including an advisory board with leaders like Amartya Sen, Mo Ibrahim, Fazle Abed, and Madeleine Albright.

As we move into our next phase, we’re growing our global team of passionate, results-oriented, big-hearted advocates, united by a common mission and a strong culture:

  • Our mission is our North Star. It’s why we all wake up every day. We pour our hearts into this work.
  • We’re innovators and changemakers. We are a young, energetic social enterprise and we know that our work is urgent. We believe in being nimble and doing what works.
  • Our work makes real, tangible, measurable progress in people’s lives. We take abstract concepts – rule of law and human rights – and make them concrete, helping people find solutions that improve their lives every day.
  • We walk our talk. Our movement is about legal empowerment and we bring this spirit of empowerment and collaboration to all our partnerships. We hold humility as a core value: we lead when necessary and follow when necessary.
  • We are a truly global organization. Our offices are located in Delhi, Freetown, Maputo, Nairobi, Washington DC, and Yangon, and our staff come from all corners of the world. We are united by our common mission.
  • We see our people as our most valuable resource. We bring on individuals of the highest caliber and character and we mentor, train, and support our staff.
  • We hold one another in the highest esteem. Our work relationships are built on deep abiding respect and love.
