Research Associate - Learning, Environmental Justice

New Delhi, Delhi, India

A rising professional who will support research, data collection and quality across the Namati-CPR Project’s grassroots legal empowerment efforts

About the position

Across the globe, protection of the environment is an area where the gap between law and practice is especially wide. The problem is compounded by poor enforcement of environmental law. India has a very poor record of compliance to environmental regulations, and violations have real and profound effects on the lives of people. Invariably, local communities are absent from the processes that oversee environmental assessments and the management of ecological impacts.

Namati, in partnership with the Centre for Policy Research (CPR), seeks innovative ways to develop and manage environmental regulation to achieve better environmental compliance. We experiment with interventions at the policy level and with institutions and communities. We seek to help communities, who are often locked out of the processes of environmental regulation, have a greater say in influencing the conditions that affect their lives.

Namati is equipping community paralegals to help monitor compliance with the conditions to which firms commit when they receive environmental approvals. Across four states (Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, and Chattisgarh), we have been pursuing several approaches that have potential for large-scale application.

Namati-CPR intentionally designs our direct implementation efforts as innovation labs, generating cutting-edge insights while we also solve problems on the front lines. As we continue to deepen impact, we’re looking for a Research Associate - Learning who will conduct research around key themes related to environmental justice and legal empowerment. Learnings from this research will help us to analyze and assess our grassroots environmental justice implementation efforts. The position will also support the management and development of our research and data instruments, in service of enhanced learning, advocacy and to ensure improved programming and impact.

Overall, the position will be responsible for the following:

  • Work on ongoing research projects about environmental regulations, regulatory institutions and legal empowerment using various research methods.
  • Coordinate process documentation of cases on mitigating environmental impacts and create linkages between case data and ongoing case work to inform program strategy and decision-making.

About Namati

Namati is dedicated to placing the power of law in the hands of people.

For billions of people around the world, the law is broken. It’s an abstraction -- or worse, a threat -- but not something we can use to exercise our basic rights.

Namati is building a global movement of grassroots advocates who empower people to understand, use, and shape the law. These “barefoot lawyers” form a dynamic, creative frontline that can squeeze justice out of even broken systems.

In the past four years, Namati and our partners have worked with over 65,000 clients to take on some of the greatest challenges of our times: protecting community lands, enforcing environmental law, and securing basic rights to healthcare and citizenship.

We track data on every case and use that information to advocate for systemic changes, like better policies for land governance in Liberia, environmental regulation in India, and healthcare delivery in Mozambique.

And we're joining forces for change. Namati convenes the Global Legal Empowerment Network -- over 1,700 groups and 6,500 individuals from 168 countries learning from one another and bringing justice to communities in every part of the world.
